Persistent pain when swallowing for four weeks

I picked up a nasty cold from someone I was sat next to on a plane. The cold has subsided, it's not as bad,  but I am left with pain on what feels like the left tonsil whenever I swallow.   Took it to the gp at three weeks,  they said come back if it's still going after it's been six weeks.   I have diabetes and I guess that can extend a cold a bit but it seems a long time to have a sore throat.   How can throat cancer begin? Feels like a long time till my appointment with the gp.

  • Hello Molecular

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had a cold, which has left you with an ongoing sore throat. It's understandable that you've been feeling anxious about things, but it's good to hear that you've already seen the GP and that they had no initial concerns.

Do make an appointment to go back to see your GP if things don't improve. If you're struggling in the meantime, speak with your local pharmacist to see if they can give you anything to help manage the pain.

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some reassurance, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

I hope things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
