Why a blood test after colonoscopy?

I have been for a colonoscopy after routine screening referred me. I have had no communication but received a call from my gp to tell me the hospital wants a blood test. I had a flat polyp(?) removed. Any help on why I need the blood test?

  • Hi SRT,

I am not sure why they decided you needed a blood test after your colonoscopy but perhaps you could get in touch with your GP and ask why the hospital has asked for a blood test whether they have mentioned this in your notes after the colonoscopy?

Feel free also to get in touch with our nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they might be able to give you some further guidance on this and they will be happy to talk things through with you.

I imagine you may be waiting at the moment for your biopsy results. The wait for results is often an anxious time and I thought I would share with you these helpful tips on how to cope while waiting for important news

I hope that you find out more soon about why this blood test is needed and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks for the reply Lucie. It was the receptionist and I called back that day to ask that question but there were no doctors. I was told it is a GP who will take the blood sample which is only two working days after the call. It’s hard not to draw negative inferences in the absence of information and i know I am lucky to be getting such swift investigation. Fingers crossed that it’s nothing and I need to accept that sometimes I cannot know.
