Suspicious Skin Lesion

Hi,

I recently had a suspicious skin lesion removed from my arm. It started as a small pinkish sun spot which I had for many years with no problems. In July this year, it started to bleed slightly, then scabbed over. The scab fell off, then another scab grew.

Dermatology removed the lesion and surrounding margins recently.

I have not had any results back yet, this was only done 4 days ago.

It has been very worrying, and the waiting is awful...

  • Thank you for your reply. Interesting to know that you had your lesion for years. Mine has never been dry, scabbed or bled. Slightly shiny if anything. Both Specialist Doctors asked if I’d knocked it, but as far as I can remember I haven’t. All the best with your results - let me know how you get on. Hopefully you will know very soon.

    • DJC, totally with you on the paranoia - I’m concerned now about tiny bumps I never thought twice about before my bcc diagnosis. Now I seem to find more and more. Definitely show them to the dermatologist.
  • DJC, when you touched your scaly patch, prior to the surgery, did it feel flush with the skin surface or did it feel like it extended deeper underneath? Mine does, which is a bit unnerving, given how close to my eye it is.

  • I think it felt like it extended deeper... I tried studying pics of it from photos taken... it wasn't very noticeable, but I could see it sunk down a little.... mine started to bleed a little, not much (noticed some blood spots on bed sheets)... then it scabbed... I thought i had probably caught it as it was in an area which could get get caught....

I googled stuff (not always the best thing to do ) but it showed as a SCC.... and according to my notes on the NHS app when I saw thr GP had  suspected SCC??

Mine wasn't a big lesion, but it certainly looked awful... one GP said it looked like a crustacean horn!..... I didn't think it was that bad, but obviously very concerning....

I will definately let you know when I hear back... i called again today, and was told no results have been received...

  • Hi Cazzyrina,
Sorry you’re having to go through this stressful wait. I haven’t got to that stage yet because I’m still waiting for surgery - but I’m keeping my fingers crossed hard for all those on this thread who are waiting. It’s weird the way these lesions can be hidden in plain sight for so long - medical/nursing staff seeing them but not noticing them. Or in my case misdiagnosed as eczema initially.

  •   I’m sorry yours was misdiagnosed as eczema. I think that can be a fairly common mistake, but that doesn’t make it anymore acceptable. I’ve had about 4 mammograms with mine and as they’ve never shown any irregularities I haven’t worried about it. I hope you have your surgery soon. Once that’s done, at least you feel like the ball is rolling. I got mine very quickly due to a cancellation. All the very best - let us know how you get on.

  • Thanks Cazzyrina, I've been warned there’s about a six month wait for Mohs surgery. How did you get your cancellation if I can ask, did you chase them or did they just notify you?

  • Thank you DJC, that sounds a lot like my eyelid one though maybe not the crustacean horn part - the sunkenness , scabbing etc - like you I initially thought I must have kept knocking the area somehow. But the gp who finally referred me, and then the consultants who’ve seen it, think bcc. I’ve changed to a new hospital now because the first lot were negative about offering Mohs surgery, so having to start over with a screening clinic there tomorrow. I keep hoping it will somehow cure itself but I guess that never happens.

  •   it was a bit of luck really. I had my appointment with the Specialist Doctor who said I’d need surgery. He asked if I was due to go away, which I was so I said I’d be available after the 17th November. By the time I got home I’d already been given an appointment for the 20th (we have a very efficient Dermatology Dept). On reflection, I decided this was too long to wait, so phoned to ask when the earliest appointment would be as I could cancel the holiday. She said there would be earlier appointments but when she logged in a cancellation had just come in so I took it. It was literally 3 days after my appointment so I was delighted and 4 weeks earlier than waiting until after my holiday. I’m not sure what the wait time would be for Mohs surgery.
