So scared about cervical cancer

Hi I’m 22 and never got the HPV jab at school. I got hpv 6,16 and 82 two years ago which I found out through an at home test. Now I’m having pain during sex and lower back pain and I’m really worried. I went to the GP today and she said she saw a white patch at the top of my cervix. She put me for an urgent referral for a gynaecologist but that made me even more worried she thought something was seriously wrong. When I’ve checked on the NHS app it says she has done the referral for suspected cervical cancer and I’m completely spiralling now because I had my life planned out and now if I need thorough treatment it could mean having no children, not moving where I want to next year and being financially dependent on my partner. Not to mention the impact that treatment would have on my health. Please if anyone could share some wisdom I’d be so appreciative to calm my mind

  • Hi Overwhelmingly_worried,

I can imagine this is a bit of a scary time for you after finding out you were put on an urgent referral for suspected cervical cancer and it's hard in situations like this not to imagine the worst and the potential consequences of treatment like the effects it could have on your ability to have children or being unable to carry out the plans you originally had and feeling like you might become financially dependent on your partner. It's important to remember though that this is all a worst case scenario and it's best if you can not to anticipate the worst if you can while you are waiting for a definite diagnosis.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that you get some clarity soon and that it turns out to be nothing too concerning. White you are waiting, try if you can not to look things up too much online as this never provides answers or reassurance. Have a look instead at our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for news which I hope will help you get through the coming days.

I hope that you will also hear from the experiences of others here who have been in a similar place and that they will come and share their words of wisdom with you based on their personal experiences.

    Best wishes,
