Advice - I'm 19 years old and a big dense lump has been found in my breast. I don't know how to feel. So many emotions

I don’t know if people even use this form anymore, so hello! I hope someone reads this and can respond. Because I don’t know what to do, I’m 19 years old and have been to the GP. I had leaking breasts with blood and have had lumpy breasts for a few years. My first GP when I was around 17 dismissed it as me having “More growing” to do: but after getting a an exam this year because it was SO ITCHY. And every time someone gave me a hug I wanted to die from the pain, turns out I’ve got a big dense lump that’s not really a lump and I’ve been referred. Like what do you do. What do you think? Feel? And how do you stop loosing your mind?

  • Hello TeAmoEll

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some concerns about your breast health and that following your most recent appointment with the GP, you've now been referred to the breast clinic. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious.

It might help to try and keep in mind that the large majority of people referred to see a breast specialist are not diagnosed with cancer. There are many other benign conditions that could be causing the symptoms you've described, so try to keep a positive mindset if you can, as worrying will only leave you feeling physically worse.

We know that for many people, this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult. It can sometimes help to talk with someone about how you're feeling, and I wondered if you might find it helpful to chat with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment and the team will be able to give you some reassurance when you see them. Keep in touch TeAmoEll and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
