Breast & Back Pain.

Hey everyone,

I feel a bit daft posting here, because I suppose the chances of this being Cancer are minimal, but I've been referred to the breast clinic - and the worry that comes with it is starting to eat at me.

I started having pain in my right boob that was dull pain, the occasional shooting pain to my armpit and a burning sensation along the side of my boob. I decided to start tracking it to make sure it wasn't part of my cycle and here I am, two months later still having the same pain which is not my normal. I've also started having a twinge/pain in my back which is directly opposite the boob pain. I've also been having night sweats. My boobs are quite large and generally veiny and pretty dense. There is no lump that I or the GP can feel, but something doesn't feel right. The GP referred me to the breast clinic nevertheless, so im just waiting on an appointment date.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced back pain on the same side as the boob pain? Or if boob pain was your first symptom... I've heard so much that pain is very rarely cancer, but I've also heard of people saying that it was a symptom.

I know I'm overthinking and likely worrying over nothing.. But it's hard to get my mind off it at the moment and I know I've got a long wait ahead before my Breast clinic appt!

  • Welcome to the forum Rosedew22 although I'm sorry for the worry your symptoms and referral are causing.

Experiencing unexplained and on-going pain is always a concern but you did the right thing by keeping an eye on it and getting a second opinion from your GP.

I know it must have been scary to find out you're being referred but I hope it helps to know that so many of our members have been through this too, so you are not alone Rosedew22, and hopefully some of them will stop by soon to share their experiences and advice.

I hope this guide on how to cope with waiting for news and the tips the NHS have on managing anxiety will help to calm your mind but in the meantime, we're sending you all our support Rosedew22 and wishing you all the best with your breast clinic appointment when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Rosedew22,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms, but you have done the right thing by instigating an investigation. You will usually get a date for the clinic within 2 weeks of them receiving the referral, although the actual appointment may take a little longer.

As you rightly say, pain is not usually associated with breast cancer and it is good to hear that you haven't found any lumps. It is a fact that only 20% of those who attend the breast clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis.

This is always a worrying time and our over-active imaginations tend to take us to all sorts of dark places. It is hard to think of anything else. Try to keep busy, whether with work or pleasure - anything to take your mind off the wait. Try to steer clear of "Dr Google". Much of the information is poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the more spectacular cases. I sincerely hope that everything turns out well for you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
