Suspected Oesophageal cancer

Hi my dad recently had difficulty swallowing so went for an endoscopy where they found 2 1cm x 1cm lesions which apparently look like scars on the oesophagus. they took biopsy results which he originally thought they told him would be back within 5 working days, his GP also said to expect this.

after claryifying with his nurse she said they need to now wait until he’s had a CT scan before he can be given any results. I’m terrified they know the result of the biopsy is bad and are now needing to check how far it’s spread which is why they want to wait for both results before giving him the bad news to avoid him asking too many unanswerable questions.

im scared stiff, unable to eat or do anything. Just don’t know what to do. I’m terrified of losing him.

has anyone got any experience of finding out results of a biopsy or experience of this scaring (or as they called it lesions) being found. I know it’s bad to google but I’m finding so little advice online I’m without any idea at all as to what is happening.

thanks

  • Hi WilliamG and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear about the lesions that were found on your dad's oesophagus and that he has to wait until the CT scan is carried out before any results from this, or the biopsy he's just had, can be given to you.

This must be a very worrying and stressful time but if you can, try not to jump to any conclusions or assume the worst until you know more. Much easier said than done I know but I hope some of these tips we have on how to cope with waiting for news will help to ease some of your anxiety in the meantime.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to support you whilst you wait.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will offer their support and advice to you soon but in the meantime we're wishing your dad all the best with his CT scan and will have our fingers crossed for good news when the time comes.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
