Colonography Experience

Hi Everyone.

Just want to reassure anyone having a colonography session. I had mine today and waiting for the findings if any.

On arrival I was asked to change into a gown. Once changed I was shown the scanner and told exactly what it does. A few questions about allergies etc. You can let them know something you might feel they should know. They don't mind this at all. They will also ask if you took your prep at home and if it worked. Mine certainly did and it cleaned me out which impressed the radiographer as it gives a full picture and can make your scan go quickly. By the way, Prep tastes like ouzo ( aniseed ) and is not so bad. It's just like a cheaper version of the original product.

Then came the insertion of a syringe type device with a balloon on it. This will introduce carbon dioxide into your intestines and slightly inflate them to improve picture quality. This can cause a stomach ache but is perfectly normal. If it gets a bit too painful then let the nurse know and they will reduce the flow. They inserted a canula to introduce any contrast and we were ready to go. The radiographer did her work and if she needs you to do anything ie hold your breath, breathe normally she will tell you.

First scan was on my back, and the second was on one side. Both lasted probably just over 5 minutes for each one and while that was going on, the lovely nurse made me a cup of coffee for after.. When completed I changed back into my clothes and sat in the changing room for 20 minutes and then was allowed to go. Still had a bit of stomach ache but was gone in 20 minutes. By breathing normally you absorb the carbon dioxide and release it via exhalation.

Went home and you can start to eat normally again but your prep can in some cases still be effective for a day so don't worry if it still does.

I hope this helps to reassure anyone having this process. It really is easy and if you do get a tummy ache, remember it will start to go as soon as you finish your scan.

Nice to meet everyone.

  • Hello Des57 and welcome to our forum.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience in such a thoughtful and detailed way. I’m sure this will really help to reassure others who might be feeling anxious about having a colonography.

It’s great to hear how well you were looked after and that the team took the time to explain everything clearly. Even little things like knowing someone will make you a cup of coffee afterwards can make the whole experience feel a bit more human and less daunting.

I hope you don’t have to wait too long for your results and that everything comes back with good news. Please feel free to keep us posted if you'd like to.

    Wishing you all the best,
    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator
