Now told I need a biopsy on my tongue after being told the lump was nothing to worry about

Went to the Dental hospital after a two week referral.for a lump on my tongue, appointment  was actually after four weeks. Was checked and the lady said she didn't think it was anything to worry about but called in consultant( who when I checked his name later is one of their top lecturers on oral health) he examined the lump and said nothing to worry about and that I'd be booked in for a routine ultrasound and see him after. I said to the lady before I left so its not cancer then and she said no. I went away relieved but as the days wen on still a bit concerned how they could tell by just looking at it. So yesterday finally two months later had the Ultrascan, scanned my Lymph node and tongue said nodes all fine and thought tongue could have been trauma of some kind, so again relieved, she said she just have a word with the consultant, he came in a different one this time. He said he couldn't be sure what it was and he arrange a biopsy and mark it urgent, great we go on holiday abroad on Tuesday for 16 nights so not going to be done until after. Just feel cross told it was nothing when they should have done a biopsy in the first place.

  • Hi Stumpy50,

I am so sorry to hear you are going through such a stressful time and that it's been a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions for you from being told it was nothing to worry about to then needing to have a biopsy on your tongue and having to deal with the uncertainty after being told he couldn't be sure what it was. It's good though that they are being thorough and that they have arranged for a tongue biopsy. What bad timing though that this is all happening when you were getting ready to go on a holiday abroad for 16 nights. I hope that you will manage to enjoy your holiday despite everything. I completely understand why you are feeling a bit cross and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing to worry about as was initially suspected.

Hopefully the distraction of being on holiday will help pass the time during this long anxious wait for the biopsy and then again for results. I know it's really hard but try and just enjoy your time away and avoid if you can looking anything up online as this will only make you feel more worried without providing any answers - have a look at our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for news and I hope that they will help you get through the coming days.

Other members of our community have had a tongue biopsy before and I hope that they will come along and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
