Waiting for results

Last week I had a colonoscopy following a colonography which showed a mass.

I was awake and watched everything on the screen. I have a more than 3cm polyp that is bleeding and the endoscopist said it looked very "suspicious" and is too large to remove via endoscopy and the caecum is almost entirely blocked. Five biopsies were taken and I am now in limbo waiting for the results and the multi disciplinary team decision.

I was told I am being referred to lower gi as urgent, it is very likely I will need a laparotomy.

To say I am anxious is an understatement.  I need to be fit to look after my husband who is recovering from an oesophagectomy. It is the not knowing that is whirring around my brain at night. Daytime I keep busy, it's the night time when the brain goes into overdrive and I'm not going to sleep until around 3am.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, PrudenceRalentir and thank you for sharing what you’re going through.

Having gone through the colonoscopy, hearing the word "suspicious", and now being in this waiting period is a lot to carry, especially while trying to support your husband in his recovery too.

It makes perfect sense that the waiting is what’s keeping your mind so busy at night. Many people here have said the same, that it's the quiet hours when everything catches up with you.

You're doing your best in a really difficult situation, and I hope others who’ve been through something similar will spot your post and share their experiences. Hearing how others coped with the waiting might bring a little comfort while you go through this stage.

If you feel like talking things through with someone on the phone our nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Please do keep posting if it helps. We’re here for you.

    Best wishes,
