called back for 2nd mammogram and ultrasound... I'm so worried right now

Hi, i am 63.   I hadn't had a mammorgram since 2014 - missed the 2017 one and then there was a huge backlog with covid, so I only ended up having another mammogram 3 weeks ago... I have been called back for further tests (a mammogram and an ultrasound)... I am doing my best not to worry about it or project into the future too much, but i had a bad nights sleep and now am really worrying last few hours.. the test is on monday.  I had a scare in 2010, a lump which turned out to be benign.  this time there is no lump, ive had no pain at all but as other people have said since i got the call back i have every pain imaginable... any words of advice would be much appreciated.thanks, Niamh

    Hi NiamhD,

    I am sorry to hear that you have been recalled following your recent mammogram and I know how worrying the wait is to be seen again. Not all recalls turn out to be bad news. I was recalled a few years ago and got the all clear - it turned out that my mammogram was not as clear as it could have been. Having all of these additional aches and pains, is a perfectly normal response. I hope that your appointment is due soon and you don't have too long to wait.

    Hi Jolamine,

    Thank you for your response.  I do appreciate it.  The appointment is tomorrow, and they said they will give me the results there and then.  I am doing my best not to over worry, not to let it take over... i am trying to meditate when I get moments of fear.  I am weighing up the things against me - my age, I do get tired and the fact that i hadn't had a mammogram since 2014 before the recent one,  versus the things in my favour - i am healthy, I look healthy, i eat healthily, i don't drink or smoke,  I  walk everyday, I have no pains or lumps in my breasts and I am pain free generally.  i know none of this means it won't be bad news.... this week has been very tough and I have kept going at work, switching off the fear when i could and getting on with life as best I could.... I know it is nothing compared to someone who has a diagnosis but it has been difficult and having this forum really helps.  Many thanks, Niamh

    Hi NiamhD,

    It sounds as if you've been doing all the right things. Keeping on at work is a good distraction and carrying on life as normal where possible reduces your 'worry' time. The strange thing about breast cancer is that it's not usually painful and it can creep in without us being aware of it. - this is why we have routine mammograms.

    I shall be thinking of you tomorrow and do hope that all goes well and that nothing untoward is found. In the meantime, keep up with your meditation.
