Dental nurse 2ww for oral cancer

Hi everyone,

I'm Beth a 36 year old dental nurse (can you believe it), so I'm pretty aware when it comes to looking for signs of oral cancer.

I have had LLETZ treatment before due to an abnormal smear and I found out I had HPV 16 and 18. Glorious. Anyway thay was nearly 4 years ago and I got the all clear from pre cancer cells there.

Fast forward to 4 months ago when I found what I thought was a traumatic ulcer from my lower molars on the right lateral border of my tongue..

I aren't currently working at the moment as I've not long since helped my mum through Nasopharyngeal cancer.

Anyway I gargled salt water like I always have in the past and was expecting it to go away. Nope. This little *** is not shifting. One of my dental surgeon friends took some of the sharp parts of my lower right 5,6 & 7 off. We were sure we'd eliminated the cause of it, nope. It tries to heal, blisters up and then goes pure white and then the cycle repeats. It also has a small 'crate?' in the centre. Needless to say I have an appointment on Tuesday for a biopsy.

Im just introducing myself really and seeing if anyone else has similar?

Thanks for reading. X

  • Hi Beth and a very warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I can imagine as a dental nurse you are pretty clued up on all the signs of oral cancer. You seem to have had a few scares recently and I am glad you got the all clear after having treatment for those abnormal cells. It must have been hard too to support your mum through nasopharyngeal cancer. I hope that she is doing ok now.

That ulcer seems to be causing you a lot of trouble and it's good this is being looked into properly and that you will have a biopsy on Tuesday to determine for sure what it is. It won't be long now until you get all the answers and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

Waiting for biopsy results can be stressful and it may seem like time is dragging on and it can be tempting to try and work out yourself what it might be by looking things up online especially given all the knowledge you already have on the subject but the truth is you will only know for sure what it might be when you have had the biopsy results.

I thought I would share with you these helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news. I hope it won't be too long now until you find out more and that you will hear from other members of our community who have had similar investigations before.

    Best wishes,
