Biopsy - genetic testing?

Hi there!

I had a biopsy done on a soft tissue lump on 30th July. When it was done, they said to chase the results if I hadn’t heard within 2 weeks. I chased after 2 weeks and the results were not back yet. I chased after 3 weeks and was told that my sample was referred for further genetics testing so will take longer.

I have obviously read that they would only do this is they saw something unusual so I have been panicking.

I rang again this week and the receptionist said that they always do this, is this right? I didn’t want to be pushy on the phone but that is not what she said initially or what I have been told by anyone else.

Has anyone else been through this or know if it is standard procedure?

Thanks in advance for any info/ advice!

  • Hello Catlady20

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some health concerns, which resulted in a biopsy. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious while you wait for the results.

It's difficult to say at this point if any unusual has been picked up in the initial tests. Some hospitals do indeed send biopsies away for additional testing, including genetic testing as part of their protocols. And sometimes it can depend on the nature of where the biopsy has been taken from as to whether additional testing is done routinely or not.

The member of staff that you spoke to said that this additional testing was part of the normal process, so I would try to take some reassurance from that. Worrying won't change the outcome, but it will leave you feeling more anxious in the meantime. Hopefully what it will mean is that when you next see the specialist, they will be in a position to give you clear answers and talk through what treatment, if any, would be recommended.

In the meantime, if you think it might help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, inforamrion and support they can.

Hopefully you have some news and reassurance soon Catlady20. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
