oesophageal cancer in healthy woman.

Hi, my wife just had an endoscopy as she’s been struggling to swallow for a few months, and they found a tumour at junction to stomach which is now being tested. Next week is the CT.

We have been told it’s 90% chance of cancer.

shes only 49 and never smoked or drunk.

is there anyone else in a similar situation?

im terrified.

  • Hi Rednax,

I’ve been there with the same cancer. You are at the scariest part of the cancer treatment patheay - knowing there is something there but not knowing for certain what, whether it has spread or what treatment is available. You’ll have answers to those questions fairly soon.

Although secondary smoking can be a trigger, only about 40% of cancers are preventable.

    Good luck with the results.

Thank you Dave. How are you getting on living with it?

My wife is very calm about it as apart from the swallowing problems, she’s had no other symptoms.

    Her CT scan is tomorrow.

Thanks again for your reply. It means a lot to me.

I’ve been very lucky and reacted unusually well to the chemo which ended in January 2014.
My primary and mets continued to shrink over the following years without further treatment and I now have “no visible sign of disease”. No-one can explain why I had such a positive outcome.
Had a scare earlier this month with a flare up of acid reflux but and endoscopy on Friday revealed a small hiatus hernia.
They took biopsies as a precaution, but things look very hopeful.
The worry of a recurrence never really goes away but it’s now part of the mental background noise.

Good luck with the scan results!

That’s great to hear. You have certainly helped me today to see a little light.
