GP referred me for an urgent breast scan

Hi, just need a place to talk, I've seen my GP yesterday and she has referred me for a mammogram to be seen within 2 weeks. About 12 weeks ago I felt a hard noticeable lump near my areola on my left breast. I am 44.

I've never had cysts before, but after googling them. I thought it's most likely a cyst. It was painful to press and I had shooting sharp pains in my breast. I've kept an eye on it, and it seems to be more under my areola that before, and tender.

After my breast exam yesterday she noticed the nipple on that side was retracted

I'm still 99% it will be a cyst. However, the 1% in me is panicking slightly. I lost my partner 2 years ago to cancer, and I'm a single mom. I'm trying to not freak out, and keep trying to tell myself that most lumps are not cancerous.

Has anyone had nipple retraction, that turned out to be for a harmless reason?

  • Hello GlisteningRainbow

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently noticed osme changes in your breast health. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious particulary as you've not long lost your partner to cancer. I hope that you've been well supported by family and friends whilst you've been dealing with such a sad loss.

It's good ot hear that youv'e already spoken with your GP about your concerns and that they've referred you to the breast clinic. As you've said, the majority of people who attend breast clinic aren't diagnosed with cancer and hopefully when you get your appointment the team will be able to give you some reassurance.

In the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope you don't have to wait too long for your appointment. Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
