I have some thickening on the top of my areola: I’ve been referred to my local breast clinic

I am a 55 year old woman. I have some thickening on the top of my areola leading to a lump under/beside my nipple. Has anyone had anything similar? I’ve been referred to my local breast clinic by my doctor - but it’s a 5-6 week waiting list. My mum passed away in November with secondary breast cancer, so my anxiety is through the roof

  • Hello Evabear,

You did well to go to the doctor's when you noticed this thickening on the top of your areola and this lump under your nipple and it's good that they have referred you to the breast clinic. I am sorry that you are having to wait 5-6 weeks to be seen but try not to worry too much if you can as being referred to the breast clinic really doesn't mean you will be diagnosed with cancer and there are so many other conditions that could be causing your symptoms. You can read more on our website on your referral to a breast clinic and the Breast Cancer Now site has detailed information on what to expect at a breast clinic appointment which I hope will reassure you.

I am so sorry about your loss, your mum passing away with secondary breast cancer. It's completely understandable after what happened to your mum that your anxiety is through the roof and that you are worried about what it might be but it's important to bear in mind that these issues may be caused by all sorts of breast conditions that are not necessarily cancer but it's important to have all the investigations so that you know exactly what you are dealing with and to get the right treatment for your symptoms. Waiting for answers is by no means easy and I thought I would share with you these helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope that you will be seen at the breast clinic soon and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,
