Postmenopausal bleeding every 28 days

I'm 55 years old and 18 mths ago I was under major stress with lots of difficulties going on in my life. I believed I was in perimenopause as I was skipping periods however just before my periods stopped completely I had began having periods every fortnight.

18 months on I had sex with my husband and a few days later began having period pains and then spotting incidentally my fitbit app had stored my period dates from 18 months earlier and the spotting had began as a notification came through saying my period was to begin.

One month on and the same happens again except this time the bleeding is the same as a proper period. Lasting about 5 days and beginning with period pain and breast tenderness and I also felt moody.

I went to the GP on the 4th day and they did an internal and said everything seemed ok. They did bloods to check CA125 plus hormones. Everything came back ok.

I was referred to the gynae.

I was given an internal US that showed my endometrium was 5.7mm

I'm now awaiting hysteroscopy and biopsy.

The practitioner had tried to do a biopsy without hysteroscopy but said my cervix was too small.

I've had problems previous. Stage 4 endometriosis in late 2000 and surgery with incision and ablation to divide the adhesions.

They were 25yrs old so very thick and not all could be cut/burnt away so some was left behind. Later in 2018 I was told by an obstetrician that she could feel frozen pelvis on my L side but after an MRI they decided surgery would be too risky based on my history in that I could lose organs such as bowel and bladder due to my history of thick adhesions. I began becoming lame in 2022 limping with pain in my groin but nobody was sure why. I had bursitis in both hips and a compressed disc L5/S1 so I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy due to the disc however they said it had released but the nerve damage was still going to be permanent.

Since then I worried the adhesions were causing issues as nobody seemed to know what was causing my severe groin pain/lameness on my L side. I had these symptoms in yr 2000 prior to my ablation surgery so began to assume it was my adhesions or fibroids pressing on nerves.

In 2023 I was diagnosed with 10cm fibroid and numerous others of different types. The 10cm one is lodged half in and out my uterus near my back passage.

Again I'm told surgery would be risky.

However now I'm being investigated for cancer. My ovaries are hiding behind my fibroids. I understand that ovaries shrink when you are menopausal.

What I want to know is could something other than cancer be mimicking periods? My estradiol is ok but the Practitioner said I could possibly have had estrogen spurts.

I can't understand how bleeding would land bang on period dates on both occasions. Could cancer do this or could it just be coincidence?

I'm told the procedure is I wait up to 4wks for the hysteroscopy and biopsy so my nerves are on edge right now as I don't know what is happening.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had bleeding in menopause that has mimicked regular periods, landing on 28 days more than once.

  • Hi Megan-mo,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It sounds like you have been going through a lot with this, and I am sure the continued uncertainty - as well as the wait for further tests - is difficult.

Hopefully following these tests and the results to follow you will get the answers you need. I appreciate it is quite a long wait so try to take things a day at a time in the meantime.

If you'd like to talk things through with someone, our nurses are available on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Hopefully you'll also get more replies from others on the forum soon, particularly if others with any similar experience see your post.

    Wishing you all the best,
