Clear Ultrasound but Abnormal x-ray?

Hi everyone,

My name is Sophie and I'm 26 (for some context!)

I started getting an aching pain in my right side of my collarbone in April and finally got to see a doctor face to face in June. I was originally tested for my thyroid and blood tests came back clear for this along with clear of diabetes and liver problems. My doctor found a large discreet lump in my right breast at my appointment along with thick white discharge and said she was very concerned about it so was referred on the 2 week urgent suspected cancer pathway. I had an x-ray too that showed no dislocation or breaks in my collarbone but showed soft tissue swelling that couldn't be explained on an x-ray.

In-between my x-ray to now, I have developed what feels like a lump in my right armpit which is painful to touch and i've even had to switch to a spray deodorant because the roll on hurt.

I've tried every over the counter pain relief, naproxen and now am taking codeine and amitriptyline but nothing gets rid of the pain. Both my mum has breast cancer and her mum (my grandma) passed away of breast cancer. Both over the age of 50.

I had my referral appointment on Wednesday and the doctor referred me to the ultrasound department due to swollen lymph nodes in my armpit and the large lump still in my breast. However, the ultrasound technician said there was nothing there and to go home.

I'm going for a second opinion with a private hospital on Monday as it's taken 3 months to be seen to just be told to go home and the ultrasound technician even suggested i'd strained my collarbone despite working a desk job and not doing anything the injure my collarbone. I can't even wear a bra now as the strap hurts and driving is out of the question too due to where the seatbelt sits.

I'm not sure what I'm hoping to achieve with this post but I think I just wanted to get my thoughts out with people who have had a similar experience and if anyone has any advice for me?

In summary, blood tests came back clear as originally tested for thyroid, abnormal x-ray, clear ultrasound. Large discreet lump in breast, swelling in right armpit and swelling around right collarbone. No painkillers taking the pain away. The pain I get is like a dull ache and is not on the left side of my chest, only my right. Could it just be a strain?

Thanks in advance everyone, I'm very worried and feel like the NHS haven't taken me very seriously because of my age despite the abnormal x-ray, symptoms and family history.

  • Hi Sophie I'm new to this site as just been diagnosed with breast cancer at 38 I found a lump in my right breast went to the doctors and they was concerned with mine and I went on the 2 weeks waiting list to see the breast clinic on the nhs but couldn't wait that long so went private it was very expensive as I was self funding but worth it they were brilliant I had a ultrasound scan and a mammogram and they said the lump was worrying to them so had a biopsy and come back as cancer sorry I haven't wanted to scare you I would be the same as you and want a second opinion every lump needs investigating and not told to go home I hope it ends up being nothing but I definitely know how scary it is for you I really hope it ends up being nothing for you

  • Hi Charlie :) Thanks so much for your reply! Thanks for being honest and I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. How are you doing?

I'll also be self funding but I think it's worth it for your health and even for peace of mind. I hope it ends up being nothing too but with the symptoms, the concern from two doctors and the abnormal x-ray, I feel really worried and I'm not sure what else could be causing the issues. I just feel like the hospital did my ultrasound and sent me home so I could be my GP's problem again and didn't advise any follow up tests or any advice. I'm so glad I have a second opinion as something just doesn't feel right! Fingers crossed for my more answers on Monday and fingers crossed your treatment goes well too <3

  • I'm finding it hard to except I got cancer but hopefully start chemo soon and start the journey of getting rid of it that's what I thought to myself it's not about the money it's for my health that comes first I really do know how you feel it is a very scary time whatever it comes back as hopefully nothing but if it does there is so many good treatments that work I know you don't know me but if you want to it would be nice to know how it goes thank you
