Awaiting MRI results (breast)

I was referred to the beast clinic on a 2ww as have a new indentation on my breast. Mammogram was clear, examination and ultrasound identified an area of change like a ravine in the glandular tissue but nothing obviously sinister on ultrasound. I was given an appointment for an MRI with contrast. When the specialist referred me I forgot to ask about timeframe for/how I would receive the results. The booking clerk who phoned me to give the MRI appointment date, when I asked, said I would be contacted in a fortnight. When I had the MRI the lady (?technician/not sure of job title) said they had lots of good images and the radiologist will look at them over the next few days, which takes time to take the measurements, then I will be contacted with regards to the report. I am unsure if I am misreading an inferred problem because of the word “measurements” and “few days”. It has now been 5 days. I am not an anxious person by nature but am frustrated with waiting. I feel like I have pragmatically accepted that it will be cancer and rather than being overly emotional just want a plan of next steps. Any personal experiences of how long investigative MRI results have taken, as well as whether it was a letter or phone call would help.

Waiting for test results can feel incredibly hard, especially when you just want answers and a plan. It’s completely understandable that you’re feeling frustrated after the MRI, particularly with the uncertainty around the timeframe and how the results will come through.

Many people here have shared that waiting times can vary, but hearing back within 1–2 weeks is quite common. Sometimes results are given by phone if further discussion is needed, while other times a letter or follow-up appointment is arranged.

It’s positive that nothing obviously sinister was seen on the ultrasound, and I hope this brings some reassurance while you wait for the MRI report. If the waiting is becoming too difficult, you could contact your breast clinic or GP to see if they can give you an update on when the results will be available.
