Neck lump 2 week referral - what will happen at my ENT appointment?

Hi all,

I was referred to ENT 2ww due to a lump in my neck. I had tonsillitis about 6/7 weeks ago and found it then; but I assumed it was a swollen lymph node. 2 weeks ago I found it was still there so I booked a GP appointment (I nearly cancelled it because I thought I was being over dramatic).

The GP said it felt big (she put in my notes 4cm by 2cm) and referred me on a 2ww because of family history of head and neck cancer and my other symptoms - night sweats, severe fatigue and frequent infections (I’ve had 6 colds this year!)

A few days ago I found another lump on the side of my neck which has increased in size since I found it.

My appointment is next week. I’m not too worried as I’m sure they’re just swollen lymph nodes, but I was wondering if anyone knew the procedure of what will happen at the appointment. The GP mentioned an ultrasound - will they do that the same day or will it be another appointment? And if I need a FNA will that be the same day too?

If anyone has had a similar experience I’d really appreciate any advice and insight.

thank you :)

  • Hello trisarahtops

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing health issues that have resulted in you being referred to see the ENT specialists. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious ahead of your appointment.

It's difficult to say for sure what tests may be carried out during your appointment. It depends on the clinic's set-up. It's possible that an ultrasound may be done whilst you're at the hospital, and the specialist may also ask to do a nasoendoscopy as well. Hopefully whatever tests and examinations are done while you're in the clinic, the team will be able to give you some reassurance whilst you're there.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses ahead of your appointment, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
