Suspected sarcoma?

Everything happened so quickly that I’m still processing it.

I found a growing, immovable, painless tiny lump (less than 1 cm) on my thigh. My GP referred me for an ultrasound, which showed the lump is well-defined but with internal vascularity(result was also very quick in just less than 4 hours). I was the. referred on a 2-week wait pathway and got a hospital appointment within 48 hours. The specialist nurse couldn’t confirm anything and said my case would be discussed at their MDT meeting. Today, I saw a specialist doctor who explained that, due to the lump’s tiny size, scans might not detect if it’s malignant, so they recommend removing the lump entirely via minor surgery for biopsy. I’ll be contacted with a surgery date soon.

The waiting is stressful, and searching about sarcoma online has made it harder to focus on work and my upcoming exam.

Has anyone experienced this? How long does it usually take to get minor surgery in this situation?I’m based in London.

  • Hello KrC

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some investigations on a lump in your thigh and at this point, the specialists feel the only way they can get a clear diagnosis is to remove the lump. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

We know that many people turn to the internet for answers when they have health concerns. Unfortunately, what we find often happens is that people are left with unanswered questions and feeling more anxious. I wonder if you might find it more helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to talk with them, they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do give the hospital a call if you haven't heard about a date for your surgery within a few weeks. Hopefully they should be able to give you an indication of when you will hear news. IF you're available to attend at short notice, then you can let them know this as well in case they have a cancellation appointment which you are available for.

Hopefully you will have some answers soon and the specialists will be able to give you some reassurance. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
