Rapid Access Referral

Hi, I was referred for a rapid access referral after I found a lump in my breast and the nurse felt it too. I rang up today as its been a week since being referred and the lady on the phone said, it's not an urgent referral but a rapid access referral.

Does anyone know the difference? I'm anxious waiting and she just said its with the consultant and couldn't say how much longer I have to wait.

TIA

  • Hello Hannon

I'm sorry to hear that you're currently waiting to be seen at the breast clinic. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about the wait.

It's difficult to say what the difference is between an urgent referral and a referral to a rapid access clinic, as different hospitals manage their referrals in different ways. It's good to know that the Consultant already has your information and hopefully you will hear something within the next week or so. If you've not heard about an appointment by the end of next week then certainly do give them another call to ask about when you may hear.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty is really difficult. If you would like to chat things through with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope you have some answers soon Hannon. Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for your reply! I got my appointment for next Thursday.

I didn't think I was that anxious but whenever I think about it, I feel very sick. My mum passed away from cancer within 3 months of diagnosis 2 years ago and my father in law is bed bound with terminal cancer now, so that is probably why. I had a benign lump in my breast years ago that was removed. I hope I'm as lucky this time too.

  • Good to hear you have your appointment Hannon. Do let us know how you get on. We're thinking of you.
