Skin check

I have a mole on my lower leg which I had checked at a drop-in skin check as part of a sun awareness day. The skin cancer nurse checked my mole under a microscope and advised me to get it checked at my GP as the borders are slightly irregular and it may need to be biopsied.

I've requested an appointment with my GP highlighting the above but the earliest appointment they have offered me is in 6 weeks time. I appreciate the NHS is stretched at the moment and just wondered whether this is a normal waiting time for an initial appointment / what others' experience with their GP has been?

  • Welcome to the forum, blm71.

I’m sorry to hear about your situation.

It’s completely natural to feel uneasy about being asked to wait six weeks after your mole was flagged as potentially concerning. You’ve taken all the right steps, from the drop-in check to following your nurse’s advice, and it’s normal to want answers sooner.

Many here will understand exactly how you’re feeling and I hope some of them will come by shortly to chat with you and offer advice.

It might help to ring your surgery before the appointment and explain exactly what the nurse observed. And if in the meantime the mole changes or just doesn’t feel right, it’s worth calling your GP again; insist that it’s urgent.

I also want to mention our nurse helpline, available weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. They’re friendly, supportive, and can help you manage the emotional strain while you wait.

Please come back if you’d like to talk things through or have an update. You’re handling this with strength.

    All the best,
