Left armpit lump - should I get a second opinion?

Hi

I found a lump in my left armpit around 6/7 weeks ago about the size of a blueberry, not painful but became a little sore I think due to me obsessively touching, the breast is a little tender if pressed (like before having a period) but nothing debilitating  . I went to the gp who examined me and referred me on a 2 week wait. I went to the breast clinic, I wasn't expecting a mammagran due to my age (37) but probably an ultrasound. I was examined and the consultant marked 2 areas under my armpit and the left of my breast. I was surprised as that was the only bit they scanned. I was at least expecting the whole breast to be examined and also the other. Is this standard practice? I was the last patient and it felt rushed, I was informed it was inflammation and given a course of 10days of antibiotics. I don't feel reassured, shoukd I put my faith in them. I feel cramp in my left side at times since (a bit like a stitch) but now I'm not sure if that's anxiety. I have recently lost my step dad to oesophageal cancer which doesn't help my situation.

Any experience of the same thing?

Thank you for reading.

  • Welcome to the forum Becca although I'm sorry to hear that you're not feeling reassured after having your breast clinic appointment.

See how you get on with the 10 day course of antibiotics and if things haven't improved, or got worse, then don't hesitate to get this checked out again.

Many of our members have had breast clinic appointments so hopefully you will get to hear about their experiences soon but if it would help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and will do all they can to put your mind at ease.

I hope this information we have on how to get a second opinion will prove useful as well.

Do let us know how you get on Becca. We'll be thinking of you and will have our fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

    Kind regards,
