Thyroid Lump - Sudden Appearance and Fast Growing

Hi everyone, 

I’m absolutely terrified at the moment - about a week ago, I felt the right side of my neck was swollen. A couple days after, there was a palpable lump at the bottom/front of my neck, seeming to be on my thyroid. It’s been growing every day since, now being about 4cm across. 

Obviously I’ve googled fast growing thyroid lumps, so I’m convinced I’m not going to be around for long. My mum has breast cancer which spread to her lymph nodes - I think I’ve been checking everywhere ok, but now I’m not so sure. There’s a link between thyroid and breast cancer, or so I’ve read. 

Has anyone experienced anything similar and maybe had something positive? I’m a 31 year old woman who has just found the love of her life, and I don’t want to go anywhere just yet. I keep bursting into tears - I’m so scared. 

The GP saw me this morning and has put me on the urgent suspected cancer pathway for ENT referral. I’ve also had my thyroid function tested, but won’t know what the results are til next week. 

Looking for any glimmers of hope to stop me spiralling. Thank you in advance!

    Welcome to Cancer Chat. I know it's never easy when dealing with uncertainty so I'm sure this is difficult. It's good though that you've made the appointment and that you have the referral in place - although this may have added to the worries, it means you'll get the information you need soon.

    Try not to assume anything at this point - though I know this can be easier said than done. Do also try to steer clear of Google, as a lot of the information won't be relevant and only your doctor can advise, after any tests.

    Take things a day at a time and try to keep busy to keep your mind off the worries as much as possible.

    In the meantime, if others here have experience or thoughts to share then hopefully you'll get some more replies soon.

    Hello bertmeko, I appreciate this post is a few months old but I'm going through something very similar. Found a firm, palpable lump on right hand side of thyroid plus associated swelling on neck. The lump seems to be getting bigger and I only discovered it two weeks ago. I saw my GP and he put me on the urgent pathway so now I am just waiting for my ultrasound and thyroid function test. My GP did say there is no swelling in my neck lymph nodes but, like you, I am concerned about a potentially aggressive tumour. I was wondering what the outcome of your tests were, if you don't mind sharing this information?
