15 year old daughter, groin lymph nodes and lump in labia

Hi, my daughter has had swollen lymph nodes in her groin since last October. Around January a lump came up in her outer labia and we were told it was a cyst. We had an ultra sound on the lymph glands before the cyst came up that showed they were not cancerous and just swollen. We have had two lots of blood tests the last ones being over 2 months ago. The lumps are now over a centimetre in size and the lymph node is also looking a bit bruised.

about 6 weeks ago I made another appointment and was told that maybe my daughters body just reacts like this to products or shaving her bikini line, but he will refer her to a specialist. However when I rang paediatrics they said it’s been booked as a routine scan which has a 3 months at least waiting list, and we haven’t had a letter yet to even book it. I was advised to ask the doctor to forward a letter and try to make it more urgent, which I did. But we haven’t had a still heard nothing. By this time she will have had swollen lymph nodes for a year or more. There is also some pain with the lumps and I am very worried this will wear her down mentally as all her friends are getting boyfriends etc. and I think she is scared.

There is no history of early cancers in my family, and bloods have shown nothing. My daughter has said she has not been sexually active, and I am inclined to believe her as she rarely goes out and is pretty innocent in that way.
I am going to get again send a message through triage and tell them the situation and ask for another appointment. But they just seem worried about her age and how to deal with it due to her being a chilled etc.

Any experiences of related issues would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks

  • Welcome to the forum, Julie.

I can see how heavy this has felt for both you and your daughter.

It’s completely understandable that you’re keen to get some movement on the referral, especially given how long this has been going on. You’re right to chase it up and ask for a more urgent appointment.

I hope more members in a similar situation will reply soon to share their experiences and what helped them.

Meanwhile, if it helps to talk with someone with a medical background on the phone our nurses are here for you and can be reached on this phone number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.

Wishing you and your daughter comfort and support through this tough time.

    All the best,
