Scary - I found a couple of breast lumps and was told I would need biopsies. Does this mean I have cancer?

I found a couple of breast lumps the other day and went to see my GP. He advised seeing g a breast  consultant which I did at my local private hospital . I had a mammogram and an ultrasound but nothing wad determined although the doctor dud say it could be cancer and I would need to have biopsies.  I am now very frightened because biopsies have never been advised when I had breast lumps in he past  . Does this mean I have cancer or can you have biopsies for other breast conditions

  • Hi Jazzygirl.

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are so scared. The three most common tests done at all breast clinics are mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. The mammogram and ultrasound can indicate a lump, but it is impossible to say whether or not it is cancer until you have a biopsy. The majority of lumps turn out to be benign and many turn out to be benign cysts or fibroadenoma. Of all the people who attend the breast clinic, only 20% will receive a cancer diagnosis. Have you got a date for your biopsy yet? There is usually a 1-2 week wait for biopsy results, but not all turn out to be cancer.

You have done the right thing in getting the lumps investigated.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you. My biopsy is this coming Tuesday.

  • Not too long to wait then, which is good. I hope that it all goes well.
