Melanoma: Likelihood of being misdiagnosed with dysplastic nevus

Hi all.

Has anyone been told after visual inspection / dermoscopy that their macule was likely dysplastic nevus, but after excision (on the Melanoma 2 week oath) discovered it was in fact melanoma?

Also, how often are results given via phone consultation? It’s it normal to be given an 8 week wait time and then receive a text with a phone appointment time for the end of that 8 weeks? Do most trusts send benign results via letter / positive in person? This approach feels like it’s in the middle, is that indicative of anything of just his that trust works?

  • Welcome to the forum, TV123.
Waiting for results can be an anxious time, and it's understandable to have questions about the process. Hopefully others who have had a similar experience will be here shortly to talk with you and offer support while you wait.
If you have further questions or need someone to talk to, you might find it helpful to speak with one of our nurses. They are available on freephone 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.
Once you know more, please come back and give us an update if you find a moment. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for you.
    All the best,

  • Hello! Thank you so much, Renato. Sorry for the delayed reply, I didn’t see this before.

I recently received my results and it came back as Malignant but early stage. I’ve asked another question and hopefully some lovely people will be able to give me some guidance.

    thank you again.

  • Hi TV123.. just seen your post.. my sister received a Myeloma diagnosis following a routine blood test ( she was considering HRT) that was Oct 2023. Quickly followed by many tests and appts. Chemo, bone strengthening infusions and oral meds.. she opted not to have Stem Cell.. following her Chemo she was put on oral chemo which will be discussed in October ( two years from diagnosis) Her first months caused crippling fatigue and several other symptoms. The oral chemo and bone strengthening infusions are still ongoing.. without any worrying symptoms.. she is incredible (69) taking care of an elderly aunt, home and family members..

I hope you have the same care and support
