Biopsy wait

My mum got a mammogram recall and had to have a biopsy of a small area of concern with calcification still waiting on results. However during the appointment with the doctor he went on to explain what would happen next e.g lumpectomy and radiotherapy. Is this normal to discuss next steps before any biopsy results this was on the 21/5. Results appointment is 3/6

  • HI Jiggygem,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that your mum's doctor discussed treatment with her, at her first appointment. I know how disconcerting this can be. Many consultants do tell patients that they suspect cancer, even before the biopsy specimens are sent away. This gives the patient some time to come to terms with the possibility and to draw up a list of questions, for when she returns for the results. I have had 2 bouts of cancer and 1 of pre-cancer - all within  a year. On all three occasions, I was told by my consultant that he was pretty sure that I had cancer, on my first visit. If there is just calcification and her doctor is talking about a lumpectomy, followed by radiotherapy, it sounds as if this may have been caught early. I had a lumpectomy first time around and a double mastectomy for the second bout. That was all 15 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. I hope that your mum will too.

Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on next Tuesday. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • So the wait is over as expected it was cancer however we have been told it’s in situ stage 0 no mass surgery to remove on July 4th. Not hormone related

  • Hi Jiggygem,

Thank you for updating us. I am sorry to hear that your mum's diagnosis was cancer, but I am glad to hear that it has been caught early. It is also good to hear that she already has an appointment for the Lumpectomy and that she doesn't have long to wait for this. The surgery is very straightforward. After this, the breast will need time to heal, before radiotherapy starts. I do hope that it all goes well for her.

Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. Don't forget that we are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
