Bowel Cancer symptoms - this morning I have seen blood in my poo and after having a wee. When should I see a doctor? NHS says 3 weeks

Hi, as of this morning, I started with blood in my poo. Ever since this morning, I've seen blood after a wee and when I wipe. I've no other symptoms, and am otherwise a healthy and highly active mid-40s woman. Yet I'm worried. How long do I leave it before seeing a doctor? NHS seems to suggest 3 weeks, which seems an awfully long time when it might mean cancer.

  • Welcome to the forum Ems, although I'm sorry to hear about your symptoms and for the worry they are causing.

Hopefully some of our members will share their thoughts and advice with you soon but if it would help to talk things through with one of cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to help.

In the meantime, keep an eye on your symptoms and if they don't improve, or continue to get worse, then do book an appointment with your GP as they will be able to examine you and let you know if this is any cause for concern. Hopefully that won't be the case but it's always good to get any persistent symptoms checked out if only for peace of mind.

We're sending you all our support Ems and will have our fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

    Kind regards,
