Respiratory Clinic after lung function test.

Hi everyone... im kind of going out of my mind. I've been having symptoms for well over 6 months - breathlessness, coughing up phlegm which is very light brown in colour. First visited my GP who sent me for a chest xray which they reported was clear and referred me to have a spirometry test. Spirometry came back with a restrictive pattern. GP then referred me to the respiratory clinic which got me an appointment with a consultant/specialist and also to have another spirometry. Saw the consultant last Wednesday who said he wants me to have a ct scan, bloods and a Feno test done but didn't mention results from the last spirometry. On the Friday morning I got a text for my ct scan which was going to happen the following Wednesday exactly 7 days after seeing him,  which I've now had done and was advised I'll have the results within 2 weeks. Still waiting for Feno and bloods. Today (saturday) I've had a text saying im booked back in with the consultant towards the end of June in 6 weeks time. I'm just wondering would they have had my ct results back seeing as they have made another appointment or is it possible they haven't? I just don't know what to expect and tbh the consultant didn't really say anything upon my first visit.

  • Hello Csmart,

Poor you it's a long time to have had these unpleasant symptoms and I can completely understand why you feel you are going out of your mind. It sounds like things are moving forward though and I am glad you didn't have to wait too long for the CT scan and that you have now had this done. Waiting for results is nerve-racking and I hope that you find out more soon about the CT scan results. Our page on the CT scan mentions that you should get your results within 1 or 2 weeks so it should not be too long now before you get some clarity on this. If you haven't heard anything after 2 weeks, you could perhaps try and chase these results and ask for an update as to when you might hear back.

It's difficult to tell really whether they might have had your results back before making this appointment for the end of June or if they just booked it ahead anyway but it's great that you will get to see the consultant in 6 weeks' time by which point you should have all your test results including CT scan and bloods.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been through a similar process before and that they will tell you more about what to expect from this visit based on their own experience.

Keeping everything crossed for you that you get your results soon and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern,

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie, thank you for your reply. Would you say ive been put on the 2ww as I had the scan done so quickly. I'm just very unsure of what's happening or what's going on as I said the consultant didn't tell me anything at all just was asking loads of questions about my symptoms.

  • Hi Csmart,

I can't tell for sure whether they put you on the 2WW but if you wanted to find out, you could perhaps contact your surgery or the hospital and check with them what kind of referral you were given. In any case it's a good thing the scan was done quickly as it means you didn't need to wait too long and should get your answers quicker. As is highlighted on our website, having an urgent suspected cancer referral doesn't necessarily mean you will have cancer. It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses who may be able to enlighten you further as to what to expect - you can call them on this free number 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Everything tightly crossed for you!
