‘Very unstable’ Duodenal polyp

Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forum, but hope someone is able to offer advice please?

in a nutshell, my symptoms started over a year ago and after numerous visits to a&e and being fobbed off with antacids each time, my new GP listened to me in January and sent me for a scan. I was then referred to gastroscopy urgently, and following a gastroscopy a hernia, ulcer and grade B oesophagitis were diagnosed. I went for my follow up gastroscopy last Friday where they then found a 5mm, very unstable, duodenal polyp. The dr who performed the gastroscopy gave me the report but didn’t seem to want to answer many questions, he did however mention surgery.  I have been referred to MDT and am awaiting to hear something. Can I ask if anyone on here has had a similar experience please, and how long it took to get treatment? It’s the ‘very unstable’ element that has me worried and Dr Google suggests high chance of cancer?

Thank you in advance

  • A little update… I’ve spoken to my consultants secretary and there appears to be a disagreement between my consultant and the dr who carried out my gastroscopy in that they don’t agree on the diagnosis of the polyp! I don’t understand how one dr can see a polyp and call it very unstable, and the other dismiss it?  I’ve been told not to worry, but I can’t help it. The next test is another gastroscopy with ultrasound, is this usual?  Not sure what happens with the referral to MDT now either?

  • Hello Lois123, and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I’m sorry to hear about all the uncertainty you’re facing right now. It must be such a challenging time, especially after having to push for proper attention to your symptoms. It’s good that your new GP listened and referred you for further tests, even though I can imagine the wait and mixed opinions are adding to your stress.

The term ‘very unstable’ can understandably raise concerns, and it’s natural to worry when you read things online. The important thing is that you’re being thoroughly investigated, and it sounds like your medical team is taking steps to ensure they get a clear picture.

While I can’t speak from personal experience, many people here have been through similar situations, and I’m sure others will be able to share their experiences with you.

I hope you find the support you need here. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have more questions or need someone to talk to.

    With best wishes,
