Thyroid biopsy - waiting for results is causing me so much worry

Hi all

I noticed a large lump in my neck 4 weeks ago now. Had blood tests (all 'normal' except liver function so needs repeating)..Had ultra sound (U3 'suspicious'). And then had biopsy on 'nodule' on 24 April. They said "within 2 weeks" but the 'wait' is causing me much worry. Is a longer waiting 'better' or 'worse' do you think? 3 more days til 2 weeks. Feels forever. Maybe I'll phone ENT dept if no word by Wed?

Thanks all x

  • Hi, I had thyroid cancer five years ago and I really don't think the length of time you are waiting means anything one way or the other. I think the results take the same time whether they are good or bad. I don't think blood tests give much indication either.

Definitely worth giving them a call. They might not have them yet, but on the other hand, they might and then at least you'd have some information.

The odds are it's nothing. Most thyroid nodules are benign. And even in the worst case scenario, thyroid cancer is probably about the "least worst option" when it comes to cancer. It's unlikely to be life-threatening and rarely requires ongoing treatment. It's usually just a matter of removing your thyroid.

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I've also spoken to a friend who's gone through and she said the same about it being "the best kind of cancer"  so i feel prepared and informed for what may happen and am ready to face it.. it's just the waiting that's annoying... I hope I hear soon, be nice to know what's ahead and plan accordingly not even said anything to my parents yet as they would be worrying more than me!! ( in their 70s/8s).

It is a large lump 3.5x 5.5 x 6cm so reckon it may need something (just fortunate I'm in no pain, just feel more aware of it now...

    Thanks again for your support.

Take care and we'll done on overcoming this!!
