Positive FIT Test

I'm 51 years' old and was referred for a FIT test as I have high platelets (have done for years as have psoriatic arthritis so not unusual) but further blood tests revealed slight anaemia, hence reason for FIT test. The result has come back positive at 13 and I've got a colonoscopy booked for the 15th May. My anxiety is through the roof and I've actually had stomach cramps and diahroreea for the past couple of days which I didn't have before and now starting to assume the worst. So worried!

  • Hello Mnic74

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been referred for a colonoscopy following a raised FIT test and other blood results. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious.

Is it possible that the anxiety you're feeling is contributing to the stomach cramps and diarrhoea that you've had the past few days? If these symptoms haven't settled then do get in touch with your GP for some advice and support.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope that your colonoscopy next week brings some reassurance. Let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thank you so much for the kind message, I really appreciate it.

I will update after my colonoscopy next week.

  • If it's any reassurance, 13 is only very slightly positive. The cut off is 10 and many people get results in the 100s.

  • Thank you for the reassurance MargaretMary, I appreciate it. Just can't seem to get it out of my mind. My anxiety just takes over sometimes.

  • Hi

I am new in here, I am with you and you are not alone. I had extreme bloating, no real changes in bowel habits but my FIT test was 14 and positive. I am so very scared too. I have an appt next Tuesday where I am expecting to be referred for a Colonoscopy. I am 53. I hope all goes well for you next week and whatever the outcome it will be treatable. Wishing you all the best.

  • Thank you Louby1971. I have had bloating and gas for years and had scans etc but was always told it was IBS. Not had a change in bowel habits apart from past few days but really think that it is down to stress. Please let me know how you get on. I'll update when I can at the end of next week.

  • Hi Mnic74

Of course I will and you. I am already finding the support invaluable, I felt so.alone. Yes, please let me know how you get on.  Good Luck

  • Hi Louby1971, just wanted to let you know that I had my colonoscopy on Thursday and all was found to be normal. They couldn't visualise my appendix so I do need a CT colonoscopy which I'm having on the 4th June. The procedure was not as bad as I thought it would be, just to reassure you. Was uncomfortable when they were going round the bends in the colon but it was shortlived.  They do really look after you.

How are you getting on? Have you heard if you need a colonoscopy?

  • Hi Mnic74

I am over the moon that this was normal for you, and that they are checking you out for other things. My GP referred me on Tuesday for urgent Colonoscopy and I have my appointment the the colorectal team on Tuesday, I take it then I will have to wait for the Colonoscopy. Just like you my anxiety is off the chart, work is saving me a bit, and somehow along the way I seem to have lost my personality! I really appreciate your knowledge now of the Colonoscopy, did you have sedation? Thank you for getting back in touch . I hope all goes well with your future scan coming up. Stay in touch.

  • Yes I had a phone call with the colorectal team and they referred me for the colonoscopy. You should get a phone call within two weeks of the appt with the team.

I had sedation yes. Was fully awake through it all but it did relax me. It's just a strange experience rather than painful and I didn't feel embarrassed etc as was fairly covered over throughout.

I found my anxiety calmed down the closer I got to my colonoscopy as in the end I just wanted to get it over with and wanted to find out if anything was actually going on.

Please let me know how things go for you. X
