Vaginal lump found during smear

Had the coil fitted yesterday due to heavy periods since hitting my 40s. Also had a smear at the same time. Cervix looks healthy apparently but Dr said there was a lump on vaginal wall. Asked if I tore during child birth.  I did. She said it looks like a tear that's been stitched up wring with a bit of growth on it. She looked through my files and there's no mention of it.  These tears I had (quite a traumatic birth) are from 17 years ago. No one has mentioned this before and I've had 2 other children and multiple smears since then. Last smear in 2022 was OK too. She said as it looks quite big for a scar she's referring me to gynaecology with a 4 to 6 week wait. Now I'm panicking! I'm in Wales where there is no 2ww. So I'm now wondering is this a 2ww equivalent in Wales or a routine appointment (can't imagine it is if uts 4 to 6 weeks).

I was in a bit of discomfort after the coil fitting so didn't ask many questions at all but my head is full of them now. I've had no bleeding between periods. Periods have got heavier,  more painful and closer together but put that down to perimenopause (mid 40s).

Does this sound like cause for concern?

  • Hello BibbidyBobbidy

I'm sorry to hear that you're currently waiting for a gynaecology appointment following a recent appointment to fit a coil. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious.

The different nations of the UK do have different suspected cancer pathways and as such waiting time targets also differ.

In May 2019 Wales introduced the Suspected Cancer Pathway. This combines all urgent and non urgent referrals into one target time of 62 days or less. This means, that when cancer is first suspected, everyone should have a confirmed diagnosis and start treatment within 62 days. The time that cancer is first suspected could be for example when you first see your GP and they refer you to a specialist or to have tests.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be really difficult. It can sometimes help to talk with someone about how you're feeling. If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays).

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long to see the specialists and they will be able to give you some reassurance at your appointment.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
