Breast lump - 2WW referral

2 days ago I found a lump in my breast purely by accident. I was applying false tan, and I was stood at an angle in the bathroom and the light was coming through the window. And in the mirror I noticed the faint outline of a rounded shape in my breast. I felt the area and was shocked to feel a pea sized lump that was hard - and painless.
I made an appt with my GP and saw them later that morning. The GP examined me and agreed there was a hard fixed lump located centrally above the nipple area. I was referred as an urgent 2ww to the breast  unit for suspected cancer.
my appt is on the 12th.

I am worried sick. I had a mammogram 12 months ago as I had breast pain and lumpy tissue- that was very different. The mammogram showed benign change in left breast , right normal. This lump is in the right. I’m worried it’s cancer. I’ve also had bloods done which were for a 6 monthly kidney check up. These came back within hours and flagged up that my platelet count is above normal range just) and is 405 . I need to be retested. Is this an indicator?

I lost my mum to lung cancer 7 and half years ago ( although she smoked. A brother to aggressive leukemia just 3 months later aged  aged 56 , another brother was diagnosed with aggressive bladder cancer 5 years ago and had bladder removed . He was 54 when diagnosed .

I am 49 years old and a parent carer. Both my children are autistic. The very thought of this being cancer would rip our world apart. I need to be here, and well for my children and I’m so worried .

  • Hello LJD1

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently found a breast lump. It's good to know you've already seen your GP and that you have an appointment date at the breast clinic.

We know that for many people, this period of waiting and uncertainty can be really difficult. It might help to keep in mind that the majority of people seen in specialist breast clinics are not diagnosed with cancer, so try and remain positive whilst you're waiting for your appointment.

In the meantime, if it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays). I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can.

I hope the specialists can give you some reassurance when you see them next week. Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
