Uncertain after Breast Clinic Test

Hi all

Just wanting to share my experience so far and see if anyone has any similar stories they can share.

I found a couple of lumps in my right breast on Monday, went to Dr on Tuesday and was sent for USC referral. The breast clinic called me on Thursday to go to the Clinic on Friday so it's all been a whirlwind so far.

During my initial physical exam the lady I saw said she thought one of the lumps was probably a fibroadenoma and the other she said she thought was just a ridge of breast tissue but she marked both areas for scanning. She then said I'd go and have mammogram and ultrasound. If I needed biopsy I'd come back to her but she didn't think that would be the case and I'd probably be sent home after scans.

I went for mammogram and was not given any details of the mammogram results before going in for ultrasound. During ultrasound not a lot was said but the radiographer spent a lot of time going over the area the first lady said felt like a ridge. She then said something to the nurse and the nurse started preparing a trolley. She said that she was unsure about what she was seeing and wanted to take biopsy. I heard her say it could still be a benign fibroadenoma but it's not appearing as they typically do. I was in shock about needing a biopsy at this point. 3 biopsies taken and a marker clip placed followed by another mammogram and I was sent back to the first lady.

She asked what I'd been told and I mentioned about how she's said it could be a fibroadenoma but she wasn't really sure and she told me they score them between 1-5 and mine is a 3. I have a results apt book for 9th of May and the lady did say I could get a call before the apt if biopsy are clear to not attend the apt but not getting a call doesn't mean the results are bad.

I'm just so confused about them saying they didn't think I'd need biopsies and then having to have the biopsy and from what I've read I expected the radiographer to tell me more clearly if it was suspicious but I sort of feel like I was left in limbo. Logically I know the odds are still in my favour but I just have a bad feeling and needed to get it all out.

Sorry for the longest post ever !

  • Hi, thought I'd share my experience and hopefully provide some reassurance. I have a fibroadenoma in my right breast, I've had it for a quite a few years but as it's a simple one it won't be removed unless it gets bigger. When I was first referred to the breast clinic I had a physical check to get marked up, then an ultrasound and from that a biopsy, I wasn't told loads and they were unsure what it was between a cyst, fibroadenoma or something nasty, i think not saying loads is normal because its easier to wait for the results. I got my results the following week and it does happen quickly which is good. Personally I think having a biopsy is good because it leaves nothing to chance and then you'll have peace of mind when they come back clear.

Take care and I hope it all works out for you.

  • Thank you so much for responding. Did ypu have an appointment for your results or a phone call ?

  • I was given a phone appointment for my results but was told if I didn't need it, they would cancel (which they did, by phone)
