13mm liver lesion

A 13mm lesion on my liver showed up as an incidental finding on a ct scan. I then had an MRI scan on it and it was discussed at the MDT meeting. Although they believe it to be benign, they have arranged for me to have the alphafetoprotein blood test (liver cancer) and another MRI in 6 months time.

why would these additional tests be done if they believed it to be benign???? I’m petrified that they are not telling me something. For reference i am 40 years old, female and the most anxious person on earth

  • Hi emrae

Be assured you are getting best practice health care. Even if the team looking after you have concluded that the lesion is benign these tests are done to make absolutely sure that their diagnosis is correct. The follow up scan in 6months is routine procedure even when the blood test shows no cancer. Hope that your anxiety levels drop, and you can continue enjoying your life.

  • Ed,

thank you so much for taking the time to reply and for calming my over anxious self!!! I absolutely appreciate it I think i’ve just had enough to be honest as a nodule was also found on my lung and had to go to MDT also and was determined as benign with no further follow up or testing so it scared with this one and the further testing  I hope you are ok also

The lung nodules are very common. I had one examined 7 years ago it was determined benign and 3mm, a recent scan shows it is still there and now 5mm. I also have recent cancer ous nodules in one lung that are from metastatic cancer which has also spread to my bones but are nothing to do with the original nodule. Take care and I hope that all your tests show you are in good health.

  • Thank you Ed, I hope all goes well for you. thank you for being so lovely and offering up your advice and kind words

  • Hi emrae,

Dont worry about the extra tests and monitoring, that is quite normal even when the doctors are confident that the lesion is benign.  In my experience, the doctors tell you straight if they think that there is a chance that it is malignant.  They monitor the size of lesions, even if they are happy that they are benign, if they get too large or are in an awkward place, they may decide to remove them (but dont worry about that, yours is still a pretty small one)

I had a liver tumour found on an ultrasound last year, it was a large one 10cm x 6cm, doctors couldnt tell from the MRI if it was benign or malignant, so they scheduled me straight for surgery.  Even though all of my bloods came back clear, they still kept telling me that it could still be cancer.  So take reassurance from the fact that your doctors are confident that yours is benign, I think that they would be honest with you if there was any doubt!

Luckily following the removal of it, it came back as benign, however my 6 monthly scan has now shown another small lesion on my liver, but like you, they are confident that this one is benign, so it will just be monitoring it to see if it grows.

The way that I try to look at it is that we are lucky that these things have been found and are being monitored, so if anything changes, they should catch it early.

    Best wishes
