Mole Biopsy Results

Hello everyone, I wonder if anyone can help me / give me advice / be realistic with me.

I was referred to Dermatology for two unusual looking moles a couple of months ago.

They had a look and want to monitor those two over a period of months. They booked a return appointment for this for July 2025 to do another comparison with the photographs they had taken.

They also completed a full body mole check and found one on my back which they said appeared to have unusual scarring through it and they weren't happy with the look of this.

I had an excisional mole biopsy on this back mole 5 weeks ago now.

The surgeon said the minute he saw it "yes that could be a low level BCC".

At the end of my surgery when I was getting my coat on to leave he asked me "do you have a history of Melanoma?", and I told him no.

My first question is - can surgeons see melanoma when they operate? Would they be able to identify it?

They told me I'd get my results in 4-6 weeks.

4 and a half weeks after my biopsy I hadn't heard anything, so I rang the hospital who said there may be a back log with results.

I asked how I should expect to receive my results and he told me by letter if the results came back okay, but if there was something that came back they will likely book an appointment.

I received a phone call on Thursday afternoon from the hospital saying they had now received my results and wanted to cancel my future appointment and book me in again now to discuss them.

They have booked me in for Tuesday at 9am.

Friday is a Bank Holiday, then its the weekend, and Monday is a Bank Holiday too - so Tuesday is quite literally the very next available opportunity to get me in.

I am obviously worried sick given the quick turnaround and the cancellation of the future appointment. But I also want to be incredibly realistic here.

They would not call me back in this quickly if it was nothing surely??

I appreciate everyone will say "you never know" - but I just really want some realism to settle me.

I also want to know whether I need to find someone to bring with me to the appointment or not.

Please can anyone advise what I should expect? I greatly appreciate no one can say for certain.

What are the possible outcomes of this results appointment given how quick this is from receipt of the results?

Thank you so much for anyone at all's help.

  • Hi munlou

    • All of us when faced with this situation of waiting for test results the worst bit. React the same, our minds go into overdrive and play out every scenario including thinking the worst. Do not read anything into the scheduling of appointments. They are on time with your results 4 to 5 weeks and are now able to let you know. The doctor thought at first sight it was a BCC and asked you about melanoma history to rule that out. So it might just be BCC.
    • Take someone with you to your appointment at the least they are likely to remember bits of the meeting you forget. Write down any questions youd like to ask as you may forget some on the day. On Tuesday evening you can breath a sigh of relief as the waiting will be over.
