Can I be assessed sooner than two weeks?

I’ve had an abrasion and lumps in my inner lower jaw since the beginning of March. I had antibiotics which took away an infection but still have the painful abrasion and lumps.

I spoke to the GP on Thursday early afternoon who has referred me to the doctor-dentist specialist to see if it’s cancer. I was told they would contact me within two weeks. By mid afternoon I had a lump in my throat and the tip of my tongue was numb. Today I noticed my upper right outside gum is numb, and my gums are going white. I think my tongue is getting more numb. My lips are going numb and so is the rest of my gums.

I’ve been shocked at the speed of the change of symptoms. Is there any way I can be seen before two weeks?

  • Hi there,

I can see you have also received a reply from Moderator Steph to your other similar post in the 'Ask the Nurses' section of the forum. The nurses will be back tomorrow, so you should receive a reply from one of them soon.

I hope that things have eased a little since posting and that you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi, i used to work in a dental environment for years (wasn't a dentist). If you're going numb on both sides, i highly doubt this is being caused by what you think is causing it. Each side of your face is served by different nerves [trigeminal nerves]. Tumours tend to affect one side only. It's why right sided toothache doesn't travel to the left. It's also why when you get local anaesthetic at the dentist, only half your lip goes numb.

If this is something, which I'm not saying it is, it's more likely to be autoimmune in nature. Those can affect both sides simultaneously.

  • That’s very reassuring. Thank you so much! :-)
