Worked in asbestos 50 years ago

I worked for turner brothers asbestos for some weeks in 1972. I was a sliver trucker - carried and pushed trucks of carded asbestos to the spinning machines. I inhaled and ingested loads of asbestos as I held the bales on my chest to put them onto the machines. It was very heavy work. There was dust throughout the whole factory and we weren't given masks despite the fact that we had to go into the carding area where the men wore masks, and ear protection.

I gave up the work as one day I felt something sharp on the left in my throat/ back of my tongue. It stayed with me for many years. I know that we're not supposed to feel asbestos but I did feel this sharp thing for several years. Subsequently I've developed a sore area and tight muscle around that side of my neck, to the left of my larynx.

I've no idea how to get this checked. My doctor seems rather nonplussed, seems to know little about it and doesn't doesn't show much interest! The pain in this area has been with me for several years now and I'd love to have confirmation that it isn't related to asbestos - or that if it is and I can do something about it. No idea where to start. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Could you pay for a private mri? Sometimes it feels like doctors are gate keepers for further testing but you know your own body and if you can afford to then I’d just go private for a few hundred pound. If not then going to have to keep pressing and pushing and ask for a second/third opinion.
