CT, Ultrasound and MRI and STILL inconclusive on liver lesion

So i had my private pay MRI last week. 4 weeks after the CT scan [that took a year to get] and 2 weeks after the ultrasound that was supposed to "confirm it is just a cyst" [it didn't]

Results were sadly still inconclusive, though did suggest mostly like a "resolving hematoma" [even though i have had no recent blunt force trauma to my rib area!] with a differential diagnosis of possibly paracystic cyst [v unlikely] or "purely cystic mucinous at the carcinoma metastasis" , Also didn't look like typical benign cyst or HCC.

its not round. its 4cm x 3 cm x 1/5cm in 7th section. looks l little like ET , or a squashed kidney bean. I have some side pain in the region. Rest of the liver looks fine. Just a weird black blobby thing hangin out in my liver.

Get an other scan in 3 months is the recommendation.

Of course i cant guarantee i can GET another scan in 3 months,, current wait lists in public sector are 3-6months. I could pay again myself i suppose, but really don't feel like dropping another $1300 CAD on it. Even if i did, i have no idea how i would then get it sent to a specialist to deal with whatever the heck it is!!

So there that. No real advise on who to do in the interim about pain management, or what will happen if it has changed. No specialist looking at it as far as i know.

I wish i was like an F1 driver earning 45 Mil a year. I bet they would have the mystery "solved" in under 48 hrs!

good times.

[ps- i am in Canada.. UK has the best forums for all things medical. I learned that while recovering from Long Haul Covid from 2020-2024. Early on Uk was literally years ahead of North American on treatments! Also, i was born in Sussex, so i kinda feel like UK is home!]

  • Hi again,

I am sorry that you didn't get any clear answers from the MRI scan that you had, it must be really difficult for you to know what happens now, as you don't have a primary doctor dealing with this.  I am afraid I don't really have any advice as such, I think that even over here, if the indeterminate lesion is under 5cm in size, quite often a "watch and wait" stance is taken and as you say, regular scans are done to monitor either growth or shrinkage.  As you say though, if you are having to pay for that privately, that is a big task to undertake.

The only bit of advice that I can offer is possibly look at the British Liver Trust website for advice.  There is a forum on there that takes you through to a website called HealthUnlocked, which deals with all sorts of problems.  Under the British Liver Trust part of that, the forum has quite a few people on it from the US & Canada, if you post the situation that you have come up against, someone from your part of the world might have some advice.

The other thing that might be worth doing is talk to your general doctor.  See from them what their opinion is, with regard to stopping any hormone treatment that you are on (I think that you said last time that you were planning to reduce it), whilst you are in this situation.  As I said last time, my Adenoma was hormone fed.

Good luck and I hope that you get some answers soon.

  • Thx Annie. I have reduced my estrogen & progesterone, i have a Naturopathic Doc who said it was fine to try. Been 3 weeks now and i havent noticed any untoward symptoms from the reduction yet, so im wondering if i DID really need it? I will try and see an actual doc, and check out the Liver site. Thanks for the advice. Hope you are keeping well yourself!
