56 bleeding for six weeks

Hi there. I started bleeding in January after nearly three years of finishing my period and been dry. On visiting the doctors I was given antibiotics for two days as I was told it was an infection. It stopped. 1 month on, it started again and have been bleeding for six weeks straight. Was told needed an urgent ultrasound but after three weeks still not got an appt. Went for an internal two weeks ago at the GP was told she couldn't see any fibrous or cyst. My stomach hurts like a heavy period, bleeding bad and clotty at times. Going into 7 weeks and still not had an appt to see any one. Is this normal. I'm 56 and previously to all this I've been dry for nearly three years. I had a small bleed about 18 months ago but lasted a few days been dry for 18 months. Help please

  • Hello Stoneage

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some unusual bleeding and that you're now waiting for an appointment for an ultrasound. It sounds like it's been an anxious time for you.

As it's been a few weeks since the initial referral, do give the hospital a call and ask how long you're likely to be waiting for an appointment. If you can attend at short notice it's also worth mentioning this to the admin team in case they have a cancellation they can offer you.

It's also worth giving your GP a call to let them know that you're still waiting despite an urgent referral being made. They may also want to follow up on this with the hospital directly.

If it would help to talk with one of our nurses for some support and advice you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you get some answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Stoneage

I am 57 and have similar symptoms to you - I am on HRT and have been bleeding for months. I also have pelvic and stomach pains as well as constant bloating. I have an appointment for an ultrasound next Thursday. I would do as Jenn suggests and call the GP. I called the Post-menopausal Bleeding clinic at the Hospital I had been referred to and they booked an appointment  for me then and there - if you have the number of the hospital you could try contacting them directly.

I know it is easier said than done but please try not to think and worry about the possible diagnosis but distract yourself. I have been seeing friends and going for a walk everyday - it helps to stop me over thinking and googling symptoms. I know it is very hard not knowing and waiting.

I really hope that you get an appointment soon.

    Best wishes

    Tina
