Mole

Hello,

I am new here and I am booking a doctors appointment ASAP as I have a new sore, crusty, bleeding mole on my leg. So much so that I thought it was a scab.. I don’t want to worry anyone yet as it could be nothing. So after a bit of googling and looking on this website I have worried myself (silly I know)

I guess my question is..

when I go to the doctors what shall I expect?

Will they do anything then and there? Or just have a look as such?

Thanks for anyone reading this

  • Hi Chloe,

It's good that you are getting a GP appointment so that they can decide if it looks fine or it needs further examination.

What will happen at the appointment will depend on whether your GP practice has a dedicated GP trained in dermatology who can check your mole with a dermascope - this shows if the cells in the mole are changing shape & they can take photos with this instrument. These photos can then be sent to Dermatology at your local hospital for them to decide if they need to see the mole. Some GP practices (not many though) also have the facilities to remove the mole & send it for biopsy. Lastly, many practices have no facilities or a GP trained in dermatology - in this instance the GP may refer you to see Dermatology or to Teledematology (a triage system at the hospital where photos are taken with a dermascope, sent to a dermatologist at the hospital & they then decide if you need an appointment to see them in person).

When you ring to make the appointment just ask if your GP practice has someone trained in dermatology & this will give you a better idea of what will happen at the appointment. Hopefully your mole is fine (75% are) but please let us know how you get on,

Angie (stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
