PET scan - followed up by urgent ultrasound

Hi all,

I had a PET scan last Wednesday and today I had a phone call from radiology to book me in for an urgent transvaginal ultrasound scan. I asked if it was because of the PET scan and she said yes but that she couldn’t give me anymore information.

Am I right in thinking that the PET scan showed cancer and that is why they are following up with an urgent ultrasound?

Can the PET scan have showed anything else that would result in the same follow up?

I have been really poorly for a year now and they are trying to work out what’s caused it so I knew deep down this could be the result. I am trying not to let my mind run away with itself but I keep thinking about how I am going to tell my children.

  • Hello MamaX3

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some recent health concerns which have needed investigation. It's understandable that this is a worrying time for you.

It's not uncommon for a different type of scan to be requested after a first one. This is because different types of scans, such as MRI, PET, and ultrasound, look at things in different ways and can give the health professionals different layers of detail. Try not to assume that because some extra scans have been requested, it automatically means you have cancer.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses while you're waiting for answers, you're welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope you have some answers and reassurance soon MamaX3. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
