Scared melanoma

Hi everyone, I’m new here and am terrified.  I had a mole type spot come up on my little fingertip which I noticed a week or so ago.  I went to the doctor today and have been referred on the 2 week cancer pathway.  I have had a horrible month with a tooth infection and extraction and just noticed this the other day and have. been worrying ever since.  I seem to remember there may have been a pin prick size mark there before but I can’t really recall.

I suffer from anxiety anyway and now I just feel terrified. Has anyone else experienced a sudden appearance of a growth?  I was told it looked suspicious.  Thank you

  • Hi,

I know it's concerning when something suddenly pops up & looks suspicious. New moles/spots can pop up at any time - usually they are innocent moles if they appear up to the age of 40 whilst after that age there is only a little more chance they might be of concern.

It sounds like your GP is being proactive in referring you so that the experts can check it out. It doesn't definitely mean it's melanoma - there are several types of skin problem it can be. Just focus on the fact that a dermatologist is the best person to check it out & there is a very good chance it will be something that's easily treatable or it will disappear on it's own. Try to distract yourself whilst waiting for the appointment. You will be in good hands. Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you so much for your reply.  I am 60 years old and both a physician associate and a GP checked it with a Dermoscope.  I originally thought it was a blood blister or a reaction to antibiotics I have been taking recently but now I’m really concerned.  I only noticed it because it was on a finger and suddenly appeared seemingly out of nowhere in a week.

I shall just have to try and manage the anxiety whilst I wait to be seen, but it’s hard.

    Thank you

  • If it is melanoma you've found it & sought help as soon as possible, so it should be successfully treated and cause no further problems in the future. xx
