Lumpectomy today

Morning had my 8mm lumpectomy today with sentinel lymph.node removal. Was so very scared.  Was 11st on surgical list so not long to wait. All was much better than expected so far. Soreness not pain, I do have quite a bit more movement than I expected too. So lots of exercises ahead to keep mobility. Then 5 days of radiotherapy  asap. My breast care nurse is lovely, but I have so much anxiety ! I began ro have stomach pain and bloating 6 days ago and now.ive convinced myself I vave bowel cancer! I have spoken to the nurse but she seems.to think it's anxiety based.  I can't think this at all! I need to ospeak to someone and get it look at but don't know where else.to go. Any ideas? I'm driving myself.mad!!

  • Hi Nanibamp,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am delighted to hear that you have now started your journey to get rig of your cancer and that things seem to have gone well for you today. I had 2 bouts of breast cancer within less than a year of each other. Like you, I was a total mess before surgery, but found both my lumpectomy and my double mastectomy, much easier than I had conjured up in my mind beforehand. The most important thing to keep on doing now are your exercises - it makes so much difference to maintain your mobility.

We all imagine all sorts of aches and pains, once we receive a cancer diagnosis, but fortunately, most of these are due to anxiety and usually disappear, shortly after we start treatment. Give yourself a couple of weeks to see if this happens and, if not, then see your GP again for a referral.

I see that you mention 5 days of radiotherapy ASAP. There is usually a gap of about 6 weeks between your surgery and radiotherapy, as you need to let your breast heal completely before embarking on radiotherapy.

I sincerely hope that all continues to go well for you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
