Suspected BCC -

Hello,

I have a suspected BCC on side of my nose/nostril, awaiting biopsy appointment.

Over the period of 1.5years I had been to see approximately 2/3 gp’s, as I had a lesion/scab that was persistent and would not heal.

On various occasions I was prescribed ointments, antibiotics as they were fairly comfortable it was not a Skin Cancer due to my age (29).

I repeatedly mentioned to the GP’s if it could be skin cancer, and it was not until I saw a trainee GP on my final visit that he said he would take some pics and refer it to the maxillofacial dept.

It will be hard not to feel some form of annoyance at my GP, if BCC is confirmed. Has anyone else experienced similar?

Thanks.

  • Hello AJR1995

I'm sorry to hear that you've been dealing with an ongoing health concern over the last year or so and that now you're waiting for a biopsy appointment to see if this could be a basal cell carcinoma. It's understandable that you may be feeling concerned and frustrated.

BCC is the most common type of skin cancer. Around 75 out of every 100 non-melanoma skin cancers (around 75%) are BCCs. They develop mostly in areas of skin exposed to the sun, including parts of the face such as the nose, forehead and cheeks and are most often diagnosed in people who are middle-aged or older.

It might offer you some reassurance to know that it's very rare for basal cell skin cancer to spread to another part of the body to form a secondary cancer.

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for your appointment and for the biopsy results. If it would help to talk things through with one of our team of nurses in the meantime, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
