Mole biopsy - waiting times

I was referred for an urgent mole excision last year for a mole ticking all the ABCDE boxes - the dermatologist said there was signs of cell changes through the dermascope. It took 8 months before the mole was excised following the dermatologist doing an urgent referral.

I finally have an in-person appointment to receive the results in person in a few weeks, but this is over 4 months since the mole was removed. I was initially told it was likely to be a phone call to get the results, but they are now saying to go in in person, and not releasing the results to my GP or giving me any other details.

I have a lot of anxiety from waiting for so long to receive a biopsy result, and am concerned about the need to attend a results appointment in-person, when dermatology services are clearly very stretched in my area, as to me this suggests that there was an issue with the mole (ie melanoma or not clear margins of a dysplastic nevus).

I'd be interested to hear from others who have had experience of in-person follow ups for biopsy results, as well as if others are experiencing similar issues about extremely long waiting times for dermatology on the NHS for biopsy results?

  • Hello jkr128 and welcome to the forum.

I'm so sorry you had to wait so long to have your mole removed and to now get your results.

Waiting for news is one of the hardest parts of this process, as so many of our members here have found out, and I'm sure it won't be long until some of them stop by to offer their support and share their experiences and advice.

I hope this guide we have on how to cope with the wait will help you get through the next few weeks but if it would help to talk about this with one of our nurses, they're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to support you and put your mind at ease whilst you wait.

We're sending you all our support jkr128 and will have our fingers crossed for a good outcome when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

Unfortunately there are very long waiting times for appointments, biopsies and results across the UK. Some areas are better than others but it's a real concern for patients. One of the reasons for your long wait for results may be that they had to send it to another hospital for a second opinion. This happens when it's borderline and they can't tell if it's melanoma or dysplastic. Once you have your appointment you could ask them what has caused the delay & they should be open with you.

With regard to it being a face to face appointment - you really can't tell if it's good or bad news as all consultants have their own way of doing things. Mine never gives results over the phone or by letter whilst his colleague does. It could be bad news, although I would hope any bad news would deserve a quicker appointment than a wait of another few weeks. However, if it's malignant, it could be very early stage - In Situ (Stage 0) or Stage 1 so it's been caught early.

I'm afraid all you can do is try to get through the wait using the advice that Steph has given. Hopefully the results won't be as bad as you fear but don't be afraid to ask them what has caused such a long delay. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
