Ovarian cancer worries. Abnormal smear and scan

Recently had the coil fitted and had some issues, went for a check up and had my smear done at the same time. The nurse couldn't find the strings so sent me for a ultrasound. Had it last week, coil was in correct place, but when she was doing the scan it was very painful she even asked me if it hurt when I said yes she told me it looked like my ovaries has stuck together. This shocked me as I only have 1 ovary! Had one ovary and fallopian tube removed due to a 3 stone cyst on my ovary a few years ago! She looked very shocked and asked if I was sure, I'm 1000% sure then asked if I'm up to date with my smears. I received my smear results today and I am being referred for a colposcopy due to hpv and borderline cell changes. So this has really worried me, ovarian, bladder and bowel cancer run in my family, and clearly she saw something in the ultrasound that looks like an ovary, what could that be?! I am waiting on an appointment with a consultant to discuss my results, but till then I am stuck in limbo, has anyone had anything similar?

  • Hello Shanah1990,

What a worrying time it must be for you and I can imagine you are feeling in limbo at the moment waiting for this important appointment with the consultant to discuss your results. How bizarre it must have been for you to explain that you had that ovary removed and you must be indeed wondering what it was she saw in the ultrasound that looked like an ovary. I know it's really hard but try if you can not to worry too much about the HPV and borderline cell changes as these can be easily dealt with when you have the colposcopy. There is information on our website on HPV as well as on abnormal cervical cells which I hope you will find useful and reassuring.

It's completely understandable that you are feeling so worried especially if ovarian, bladder and bowel cancer run in your family but try if you can not to anticipate the worst. Many members of our community will have had experience of abnormal smear results and cell changes or perhaps someone else on here will have been through something similar and I hope that they will be along shortly to share their story.

While you are waiting, I thought I would share with you these helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news. Try if you can to stay well away from the temptation to look things up on Google as this will only make you feel more anxious and will never give you any reliable answers.

Keeping everything crossed for you for good and reassuring results.

    Best wishes,
